Presentation of the project
The “Perseguits i Salvats ” (Persecuted and Saved) project is an initiative of the Diputació de Lleida which – through the Institut d’EstudisIlerdencs (Institute of Lleida Studies) and Patronat de Turisme (Local Tourist Board) and in collaboration with various local councils and local district councils within the territory – is much more than just a magnificent proposal for recovering culture and the historical memory or promoting tourism in the Lleida Pyrenees.
During the Second World War, thousands of Jews arrived in Catalonia by crossing the Pyrenees as they fled from the barbaric actions and horrors of Germany’s Nazi regime. Whole families followed these escape routes under extremely harsh conditions. The lives of many of these people were saved thanks to the help and support of anonymous citizens who lived in the Lleida Pyrenees.
“Perseguits i Salvats” is a local project with international projection. On one level, it implies recovering several of the Catalan escape routes used by Jews during the Second World War. It also pays tribute to the commitment of many anonymous people and recognises the solidarity demonstrated between people Jewish and Catalan people and their many historical and cultural similarities.
